What a Freight Forwarder Actually Does
A freight forwarder is a company that acts on behalf of an importer or exporter to manage the movement of goods from one country to another. The freight forwarder does not own the ships or aircraft that carry your goods that is the role of shipping lines such as Maersk, COSCO, or CMA CGM. The freight forwarder works for you: booking space on those vessels or flights, managing the documentation, coordinating with ports and customs authorities, and ensuring the cargo moves correctly from origin to destination.
In practical terms, moving a shipment from China to Pakistan involves at minimum: a Chinese supplier or factory, an export customs process in China, a vessel or aircraft, a port or airport at each end, a Pakistan import customs process, and a final delivery arrangement. Each of these involves a different party a shipping line, a port agent, a customs authority, a ground carrier. A freight forwarder coordinates all of them on your behalf under a single arrangement.
